Wishing you and yours

Wish you all and all of yours a very Merry Christmas and Peace, Joy, Love in the coming New Year. I am pasting a chorus from a sung by "The McKameys" that give me strength when something overwhelming happens in my life. I hope that it will also give you all encouragement if you ever hit a bumpy place in your road of life.

Chorus:

God will make this trial a blessing tho it sends me to my knees. Tho my tears flow like a river yet in him there’s sweet relief. There’s no need to get discouraged there’s no need to talk defeat. God will make this trial a blessing and the whole wide world will see.

Thank God the final is over!!!

Shooooooooooooo.

I have been working on that final for 3 days. My son has been in the hospital and it has been really hard but I made it. I just now submitted my final and I am so glad to get that over with. I am now officially done for the semester. I really enjoyed this class and I feel like I may have actually learned something. My son came home (finally) and he is doing much better. He builds furniture and he contracted cellulitis in his finger some how from a splinter. He ended up in the hospital for 4 days and he still has an IV in his arm and a drain tube under his finger nail yeah sounds pretty gross I know. Hestill has to go for antibiotics every day for 5 days. Without prayer and God I could not survive 1 minute. I hope everyone have a joyous and blessed Christmas and Happy New Year.

Monday power

What happend with the power monday? I was in the middle of a computer class final and after about 4 questions the power just went out, then the fire alarm went off so we had to stand out side in the cold for 20 minutes befor we could figure out what to do. so the teacher just decided to put the final online and have it due thrusday morning. What happened to the peoplet that were taking paper finals?

Final

Do we have to do all the questions except wednesday nights questions? I was not able to be in class last monday so I am confused.
This class has been a great experience and has taught be so many things about language that I didn't know before. This class has really made me prepared for the difficulities I may face when I start teaching. It has made me better prepared to deal with students who may have delays in language and those who don't. I've learned that its very important to be well versed in language and I will be sure to pass that on to my students. Thanks for a great semester Mrs. White.
The questions on the bluegrass technology center were pretty hard to answer if you weren't able to make it to the field trip. It took alot of researching on the internet and looking at the weekly resources to try and get the right answer. I'm just hoping that what I found was right. If you couldn't make it to the field trip like me I suggest going through the weekly resources and then searching through google to get a better understanding of the questions before you answer them.

Good luck on finals everyone!!

Sincere Question - Interested in Your Opinion

Just curious as to your opinion . . . Do you think an instructor/professor should prepare for the class he or she teaches - or come to class and decide upon arrival what to do that day/evening?

Do you think a student should have to PREPARE for a class in order to be able to make a good grade in the class? How much time do you think a student should have to put in to a class OUTSIDE of the class in order to be able to do well? What type of activity do you think is practical or reasonable to expect students to do on a weekly basis to prepare for a class in order to make the class time a richer learning opportunity?

Test

In Question 13 do we just have to list device/resource.
We don't have to explain them do we?

Video In Class.

I was just wondering what you all thought about that video that Mrs. White showed in class last Monday before we left. I thought it was really cool and eye-opening, I wasn't expecting it at all, I mean at first I thought it was just going to be talking about how the animals pushed through and survived but I thought it was really interesting how whoever made it connected each different animal to a specific kind of child who learns a certain way. I just liked it and I was curious to see your all's thoughts.

Links for a various activities

I have included some websites that you can visit and find a lot of free activities to use in the classroom or with your own children. These site provide lessons, crafts, links to other activities and recipes that can be adapted for different levels of learning. "Felt Fun" is a group online that you can join and get a lot of ideas and pdf's emailed to you. They do send a lot of emails, but if you like crafts and printables it would be worth joining. Alenkasprintabes website offers free stationary and scrapbooking printables along with others.

If You're A Blogger

I know not everyone is a blogger! But, for those of you who enjoy staying in touch, sharing resources, fun ideas, etc. I have created a blog at a different site where ANY ONE can post. This is simply an invitation for those who would like to participate. Perhaps it will continue over the semesters and become a site people can use to network, stay in touch and use in a variety of ways if they need ideas or help in other classes or once they get into their classrooms.

I've not used this other blog site before so it's a totally new learning experience for me. Honestly, I have no idea what I'm really doing so perhaps we can learn together and you may end up having to teach me! So, if you'd like to stay in touch or check it out (nothing there right now except one post to get us started - perhaps you can help with that) visit it at http://ideas4us.wordpress.com/

Reading to Classes

Just in case. . .

I was being totally serious when I said I would LOVE to come read to your classes when you are teaching in your first classrooms. I do hope you'll tuck my contact information away. Feel free to use it if you ever need a reference or help with something. But, definitely do remember me once you're in the classroom. I am always having classroom withdrawl and definitely want to come read to your students.

Project Question

Okay Im almost done with my project, but I was wondering if anyone knew what Halliday ment on the Analysis of Pragmatics , Function of language section means. I just noticed it and I'm slightly confused. If anyone could get back to me that would be awesome! Thank you all bunches*

Your Opinion

I am interested in your opinion. I am considering having ONE blog for both classes to participate in next semester instead of one per class. The blogs from semester to semester and class to class have been so incredibly different and used in such different ways. Just wondering what YOUR thoughts are about having both classes participate in the same blog.

Any other ideas or suggestions are also welcome as I reflect and prepare to revise for next semester.

the semester's ending

I'm glad but really sad to see this semester end. I have really enjoyed this class and Mrs. White you have been great. It's nice to know if we need help, advice, or anything even when the class is over we can still turn to you. I have learned alot and hope that everyone has the best of luck in their futures. I'm sure everyone will do great. I'm sure we will all meet again in future classes or occupations.

Field Trip???

Hey everyone!

Could someone please give me an overview of what happened in class last Monday night? I wasnt able to make it and I have read a lot of interesting things on the blog, so it sounds like I missed a really good class.

Krista Greene

field trip

Hey i thought the field trip was very eye opening. there are so many different ways to get language across to people who have trouble. I've been talking about it to a lot of people at work and my roomate.
Does anyone know if Mrs. White has posted an example sample of the Language project? I know that we saw some in class, but I thought she was going to post it on blackboard. It would really help me to see a visual! :)
Hey everyone,

I am looking forward to class tonight.. See everyone later..
JENN

Field Trip....

I thought that one of the devices we saw was very interesting. I can't really remember what it was called though. I think it was midobi or something like that. It was the machine that helped people communicate though their eyes. It like scanned your pupils or something. I was blown away that a machine like this even existed. I would love to know more about this device. I enjoyed going to the Lexington Bluegrass Technology Center.

Field trip- A child named Joe

No one is posting blogs about Monday nights field trip so I'll start event though we have class tonight. I thought that Joe was a fascinating little boy who displayed all three types of Echolalia that we discussed in class, immediate-delayed-and mitigated.

I really enjoyed the field trip. I love have hands on stuff when you can actually see and get o better understand of what is being taught.

Language Project

I was wondering exactly when the language project is due. In my notes I have that it is due this comming Friday, but then I heard or thougth I heard that it is due tomarrow?

Front of the Class

Not sure if you all have ever heard about it but there is a movie on CBS right now called Front of the Class, it is about a boy who had touretts syndrome and struggles with it throughout school and follows his ambitions to become a teacher, I would recommend it to all of you to watch it, it is a wonderful movie.

Class on 12/8/08

Mrs. White,

I am not going to be able to make it to class tomorrow night and I was wondering if I was going to be missing anything important. I have an appointment that has been scheduled for some time in Somerset at 4:30 and I don't think I can make it to class from Somerset and go to the doctor as well. Jackie, if you are reading this call me and let me know what I missed. I am going to be submitting my language sample tonight.

Regina

Field Trip

I wasnt able to make it to the field trip due to the fact that I had to spend a little over 800 dollars to have my car fixed. It happened the day of the field trip and I didnt have time to get a hold of anyone to get a ride there. If someone could catch me up a little bit on what I missed Id really appreciate it. Im pretty bummed that I couldn't be there it would have been really interesting.

Language Project Questions

If you have questions about your Language Project I would encourage you to post them here on the blog. I'd also encourage you to attempt to answer one another's questions. I'll chime in as needed - monitoring the posts.

Also, I will be staying after class on Monday and Wednesday in Wallace 346 to answer questions, work with people on specific issues on their projects, etc. I would still encourage you to post items here that could give you a big jump on next week.

I've seen SEVERAL drafts of projects. They ALL have looked OUTSTANDING! The questions I am getting are EXCELLENT questions and the typical ones we have as we begin to analyze language. Keep them coming via email, blog or phone - all are welcome.

Bluegrass Technology!!

I just wanted to say that the field trip was a great experience. I had no idea anything like this even existed in Lexington. I learned a lot of new information and I was able to see a lot of new technology. This experience is something that I can use in the future as well as in my classroom. This would also be a great place to complete some community service/volunteer hours.

Monday, December 1, 2008

I'm sorry, but I will not be able to make it to class tonight. There was a family emergency. Hope everyone has fun and I'll see everyone next week.

Sunday, November 30, 2008

So Im pretty excited for the field trip were going on. It will be nice to not have to be stuck in a classroom for a little over 2 hours ( no offense Mrs. White). I think it will be a great oppurtunity to learn alot more about our field and trying to help students learn.

Field Trip Monday

I accidently deleted my email and need to know what time we are supposed to meet for the field trip. If anyone could let me know I would appreciate it.

News from Washington, D.C.

Greetings from the nation's capitol! Gallaudet won 95-83 tonight although they were ahead by 25 at one point in the first half! Here you see Sekoe going up to score 2 of his 21 points to welcome us to our first game of the season. We look forward to watching him play again tomorrow night and then heading back to Kentucky Monday - arriving just in time FOR CLASS!!

Is anyone else doing the pragmatic's for the learning project? I am and I think that I am doing it right but, if someone esle is doing the same one and wants to get to gether and talk about it monday after class please let me know. I am going to bring it with me and let Mrs.White see what I have done as well. Let me know if any one needs a ride. I am brining one person so far and I have 3 more seats if anyone needs a ride. Examples of language samples

Mrs. White,

I was wondering if you were going to put the examples of the language samples you went over in class on the overhead. I think I asked and you said you would but I have looked through everything on Bb and cannot find them. I thought I might try and finish my sample this holiday break or at least work really hard on trying to. I may have looked over it which is possible. If so where can I find it. I just wanted something to look at when it comes down to the final steps. It always helps to have an example to go by.

Thanksgiving

I said this in class in an abreviated fashion. Here is the typical Mrs. White's long winded version...

As Thanksgiving approaches. . .I am thankful for each of you - sappy as it sounds and what you have taught me this semester. I'd say I'm thankful you have listened to me preach - but then - what choice did you have . I'm thankful for students who want to learn, who email and ask questions, who call and make sure, who put family first, who come to class when they don't feel like it, who know when they need to check their priority list and stay home (or go to the hospital), who choose a different major when they realize teaching isn't for them, who dig in and give it their all for the love of children, who know when to laugh it off and realize it's not about the grade it's about what they've learned - and they've learned all they can for that day, who believe that no matter where you come from, how much money your parents have in their pocket, how much education they had, what language they speak, what their skin color is, how well they can walk, talk, think, hear or see . . . I am thankful for the student who believes that child can - despite what society would say - can learn at high levels and WANTS to teach them. That's why I am thankful for so many of you.

Prayer Request

Hey guys..I want to ask all of you who believe in prayer to say a prayer for my family. My aunt passed away about 4:30 this morning, and it's really hard on my family.
Thanks So much

Keene Hall

So Keene hall is basically a death trap. The middle elevator had dropped 10 floors and last night while I was in it it droped 2 floors. the 4th floor has no power and some boys are catching the trash cans out side on fire. The RA's in Keene said that they will not do anything about the elevator because no one has gotten hurt and they know that one of the cables have snapped.
I am doing my test now because work has been crazy with the free coupon that we had in the news paper. Hope everyone had a good weekend see you all tomarrow.

More Test Help.

So I remember Mrs. White saying that we would use the articles on BB for the test. Which question did you all find that they helped with? Thanks! .... Again...

Test Help.

Hey all, Ashtin and I went to the library Thursday and looked up some of the answers to help eachother out, having said that, we had some trouble locating where the answer for number one and five. Thanks for your help!

Article

Would someone care to tell me the title of the article we did our summary on? I cannot seem to find it and the one that is on blackboard is not the same one.

Thanks

Class - Monday, 24th

Just reminding folks we DO have class, Monday, the 24th. I realize many of us will be traveling that week (I'm going to DC to see Sekoe) so some will need to miss class. Be sure you are checking your attendance. Don't forget to check the syllabus to see that four unexecused absences will result in a drop of a letter grade for the course.

Attendance in class is an expectation. I look forward to seeing many of you Monday night. I'm sure it'll be an event of Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving

Hey Guys. So I wont be in class again this coming Monday. I'm going to New Hampshire for Thankgiving. You thing it's cold here, just remember me next week. I'm sure Ill be freezing but hopefully it will snow and be gorgeous so it's worth the coldness. What is everyone doing for thanksgiving??

I have taken so much cough syurp I do not know if im coming or going..... Anyways, will someone let me know what we covered in class or any important annoncments....

Has anyone else tried to access the test? I thought it was available starting today but it wasn't in blackboard.

Observation Question

I'm writing my observation right now and it is quite lengthy I feel. I was just wondering how long it is suppost to be. I looked through all my notes and papers, but couldn't find anything about the length. I feel like I have a lot I can talk about to relate my observation to what I've learn in class... Which I don't think is a bad thing :) I just didn't want to write too much. Thanks!

Friday, November 14, 2008

SUBMITTING Observation

Make sure you submitted your observation to Blackboard AFTER THURSDAY NIGHT AT 11:00 or it is lost in cyberspace. If you submitted it prior to that you MUST SUBMIT IT AGAIN.

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Class

Sounds like Imissed alot on Monday. Sorry I missed everyone, I wasn't feeling well. I have been having problems with my stomach lately. Well I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday.

Praxis

Ok I know that this does not exactly go with this class but has any one taken the praxis test? I have to take it Saterday, and I am really nervious, I am already a semester behind because I missed my ACT score by 1 point. I was wondering if any one had any tips, I have a book that is by the same people who make the Praxis and have been doing good in it.
On another note my observation on tuesday was interesting I had to chase a student that was suppoed to be in a FMD room around the school she did want to be in there. Not sure why. but it took a lot of COMMUNCATION to get her to finally stay in the room. which was extreamly difficult to do with a student who has a 3 word vocabulary.

Projects!!

Just wondering what people think on the semantics option with the Language Analysis project? I found that not to be too bad! I think this is the one I will do, however I like the pragmatics one as well. Which one have you all decided to do? Was there anything extremely challenging when completing it? Or do you all have any suggestions?

RAIN :(

I don't know if anyone agree's, but it was freezing today. I hope everyone had a better day, because rain, freezing cold temperatures, and NO UMBRELLA doesn't mix what so ever. On another note, last night was extremely helpful with the projects. I was scared at first and a bit clueless on how I was going to format my project, however now I have a very clear idea! I am glad we dedicated most of the class time to our language analysis projects. Thanks :)

Bonus Points Available

Everyone in class receives this booklet FREE. It is a GREAT way for you to see how the components of language that we are discussing are essential in teaching students to read. We have discussed how these develop in a child's spoken language. The book will show you how the various components of syntax and semantics are so important in developing reading skills.

You have to do NOTHING with the booklet. However, if you WANT you have the opportunity to use it to earn bonus points.

What you will do is you will choose either syntax or semantics. You will read through the book using the Double Note Entry form. On the left hand side make notes - you do not have to copy entire paragraphs or EVERY one. You will choose what you believe are the MAIN ideas or key points. You might put the beginning of a phrase and the page number on the left. On the right side then put a reflection of what we have learned about that idea in class, an activity we have done, a personal reflection or a connection you have with that to the real world. The number of points will be determined by your effort, the amount of information you provide up to 20 points.

Halloween

Just wanted to wish everyone a happy Halloween

BIG REQUEST

I am making a MAJOR REQUEST!!! When you get ready to create a post PLEASE read through the other posts on the blog FIRST. IF there is another post with the same topic and ESPECIALLY the exact same title then simply COMMENT on that post. Do NOT create a new post about the EXACT SAME THING!

Use your PRAGMATIC skills and MAINTAIN THE TOPIC. Simply click on comment and type your post in the comment area. You get the same credit for a comment as you do for a post. The UGLY side of me is tempted to NOT give credit for posts that are duplicate new posts that are more appropriately placed as COMMENTS to an existing post.

Remember, COMMENTS DO COUNT AS POSTS FOR POINTS and they actually create more of a conversation or stream of thought - the purpose of a blog - - - to create dialogue. It's not to be a listing of one liners simply to gain points. I'm amazed at the benefit students have gained when they determine to meaningfully connect with their peers to exchange purposeful information.
Hope everyone is having a good halloween! The weather is great...perfect for fall break! Have a good long weekend! :)

Field Trip

I was also wondering if I could ride with someone? I will help with gas.

Have a safe and happy halloween

I hope everyone has a safe and happy night and a good fall break.

happy halloween

hope everyone has a happy and safe halloween

Field Trip

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could let me rid up with them when we go on our field trip? I don't have a car and this would really be of help. I could pay some money for gas to who ever is willing. Its not till Dec 1st, but no harm in asking early. =D

Possible sign language??

Ok so I am about to map out my schedule for my next semesters classes and after last nights class I just felt like sign language would be super helpful to me if I could learn it, If any of you can sign, please leave me feed back about whether or not I should consider this, how difficult is it? Would I learn enough in just a few semesters of ASL?

After Today's Class...

I feel like I learned a lot tonight from class. I really didn't know that about being deaf. I had no ideas there were that my ways people sign. Recently, I have thought about taking a ASL class, but it looks extremely complex. Does anyone have any advice?
On a different note:
I was shocked today from the movie when it said that parents used to take their children on airplane rides to see if they would gain their hearing. Then the older man said he was taken to a baseball game to meet Babe Ruth so he would be cured.

Absent

I wont be able to make it to class tonight because Im sick. :-( If someone could please let me know what I missed in class, that would be really helpful. Thanks!

I have sent an email to the class offering 12 bonus points. If you have not read your email to learn HOW this will work, I'd encourage you to do so now! It's a ONE TIME offer - not available throughout the semester.

Due Dates

I know that the class schedule has due dates on it, but I seem to be having a difficult time. I just want to make sure I know what I am doing. ("Our Language Analysis Project – Review Projects are due on November the 10th and our Observation Reports are due on November 24"): Is this correct?

Halloween

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween since we wont meet again until then. Is anyone dressing up? Haunted Housing? If you all have been to a "good" haunted house can you tell me where you went? I'm looking for a good one to go to this year, I'm still getting use to the area.

Monday Night

So, I really enjoyed class last night. Everything is finally starting to come together and make since for me!! I really struggled with this class up until this point.

Question? Want Help with your Assignments or Project?

As each of you are aware there are NO CLASSES on Monday, November 3rd due to Fall Break. This means the Monday night class wil miss an additional week of class.

You will notice on the course schedule there is currently no Wednesday night CLASS scheduled for Wednesday, November 5th. This is an attempt to keep the classes on basically the same schedule.

HOWEVER. . . I do plan on being at EKU in room 346 on Wednesday night, November 5th. I will be available to work with individuals one-on-one or in small groups to go over your Language Project work, material for the upcoming test, review your Observation or discuss any concepts you're having difficulty with in the course. This is purely OPTIONAL however, I will be in the room that night regardles.

If you wish to meet with me that night feel free to "drop in," email or post a comment here and schedule a specific time during that 6:00 - 9:00 block to chat. You will not be coming for the entire time - it will be only the time needed.

I would encourage those of you who want to get input on the analysis of your Language Project to sign up for a time and bring your transcription with you. We'll work on a part of it together ensuring you understand how to complete it.

Question

I'm still a little confused about the difference between integrated/functional and nonintegrated/nonfunctional approach I don't think I have the best grasp of it. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me understand it better... <.<>.>

Video Clips - LD & EBD

I've added a couple of the video clips we watched in class to the side. I've also added a new one - Diagraph Rap! Where do you see this connecting to our study of children with LD or EBD?

Can not make it to class..... :(

Ms. White,
I can not make it to class tonight. My car is in the shop and was supposed to be done this morning, but now it will not be ready until tommorow. My mother was supposed to let me use her car tonight, but something came up with my younger sister and she has to drive a bunch of girls on her volleyball team to a game tonight. So therefore I am stuck with out any wheels and forced to stay home. I do not know what else to do. :( I am very sorry. I have sent my test through blackboard. If someone could post anything new to the blog after class that we are not aware of, I would really appreciate it. Thanks alot. Sorry againe for missing.

update

I have decided to definitely wait until after next week to make sure that I want to keep the job, were we are relocating they have us newcomers working a lot and they don't want people to change there schedules, on one of the test that I had to take for work it said that if you change your availability then you might not be able to keep your job. They said that they hired you for your availability now and that is what they need you to work.
On another note I think that I did good on this test, after taking the first one and getting a feel for how the second one was going to go I was more confident in myself. See you all tonight.

Test

Has anyone started on their test yet?

Suggestions

I have just started working at Hastings, I also have just found out that my mid-term grades are not so hot either. (Not in this class though) I need help deciding if I should keep the job for a while longer and see if things change or if I should quit so I can really focus on school. I am open to any suggestion.

Daily Dozen response.....

I wish I could do this everyday. I do try and find time to at least pray and thank god for the blessings he gives me daily. Many times we take our lifes for granted and get too caught up with everything that involves our work or school. I rarely take time for myself due to not having the time. I have been really busy this week with this test and 2 others online. It has been an overwhelming week but I will get through it and I thank God that I know I will. It is weeks like this that make us appreciate those weeks that are not so busy even more. I want to tell everyone good luck on the test and I am looking forward to class on Monday. Mrs. White, I have been bragging on you and your style of teaching, I have recommended others to be sure and take your class if they need it.

Article - Reading Response

I have sent email to everyone regarding the article and reading response assignment. There is additional information on Blackboard in the Assignments tab. I encourage you to look at this EARLY before the due date.

The response is now due on Friday, October 31st.

Feel free to post questions here on the blog or discuss with one another ways you are approaching or completing the assignment.

I was just wondering if any of you all saw the /B/ markings all over campus today. I saw that a lot of them had been written with chalk all over the place and it made me think about the phonemes in class I was just wondering if there was any connection or if you all knew anything about it. Have a great week and good luck on the test! See you Monday.
Hey guys,
I think im still a little rusty on what we covered in class, anyone else having trouble? I think my problem is that i think about it to much! Anyways everyone have a safe week.
Jenn

Daily Dozen

As we near the middle of the semester with many assignments, projects and tests on the horizon. . . I encourage you to consider these dozen tips for each day...
  1. Take one day at a time.
  2. Pray
  3. Eat right.
  4. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don't lump the hard things all together.
  5. Talk less; listen more.
  6. Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety. If you can't do anything about a situation, forget it.
  7. Find time to be alone, jot down thoughts and inspirations.
  8. Spend time with someone you love.
  9. Laugh, find at least a few minutes to relax and have fun.
  10. Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can).
  11. Go to bed on time and get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.
  12. Every night before bed, think of one thing you're grateful for that you've never been grateful for before.

Mrs. White,

Hi it's Jenn, I was just wandering if you could give me the copies tonight in class from last monday night class where I had missed? Or how I was supposed to get them. Are they on blackboard? Anyways, I hope to see everyone tonight in class! Thanks,Jenn

Sunday, October 12, 2008

That is a great picture and I strongly feel you will be in the same place next summer. I was certainly glad to find out that the test is not due until next Monday because I was stressing. I have had family in from Michigan since Wednesday and I have a test due online tonight. I got online and saw that test 2 was posted and I panicked.

I hope everyone had a good weekend and I will see everyone in class tomorrow night.

Virgil's Home

Thank you to each of you who took the time to pray for my husband and me. The CAT scan showed no blockage. The abdominal pain and other issues he was having were the result of medication. Once they removed the tube from his stomach, changed the medicine and started feeding him again through his mouth rather than the IV he was able to keep food down and everything started working well. Although we spent our anniversary at the hospital yesterday he was released and able to come home today. Now to see if we can get him to and regain some weight!! Here's a picture from our summer fishing trip in Wisconsin. I'm praying for a repeat trip in July of 09!!

Test

I am very confused, is Monday nights test due the 13th, or the 20th? I was under the impression it was due the 20th, but I am just making sure. See everyone Monday!

Classroom Observation

I was looking over the document on our classroom observation assignment and I' m a little confused. Does anyone know if a daycare is considered a school setting? I would love to shadow a special ed teacher that works with autistic children but I'm not sure how to go about doing that. Does anyone have any ideas? I know that we havent really talked much about this in class, I was just looking ahead. Have a great weekend! :)

Language Project Analysis

Just curious to know if anyone has chosen which analysis, (Form, Semantics, or Pragmatics) you are going to use.

Language Project

The last two classes have flown by fast. I think the language and morpheme exercises have been fun and very interesting. I have to admit I'm getting a little excited about doing our language project. I think that I'm going to do mine with my best friends little boy who is autistic and still learning words and how to communicate. He has come a long way in the last year, so she tells me. I'm interested to see how much he has acually improved. :) See you guys Monday!
I just wanted to send my thoughts and prayers to Mrs. White. I know this must be a hard time for you and you husband. Your dedication to us and your classes makes me feel more dedicated to my education than I thought possible. I wanted to express my gratitude to you for you inspiration to all of us. You are a wonderful educator and made our class time very enjoyable. Thankyou!

Dr. White,

I wanted to say that I am remembering you and your family in my prayers. I hope everything went well at the hospital this morning. I wanted to also thank you for telling your story last night in class about the girl getting killed in the accident. My husband's family lives in Michigan and his sister is dating a guy that my husband grew up with there in Michigan and his daughter got killed last weekend from drinking and driving as well. Her 17 year old son was in another vehicle behind her and saw her leave the road. The vehicle caught on fire after she smashed a huge tree and she was trapped. Her own son watched his mother burn up and couldn't get her out. She had a 5 year old daughter that is still in critical condition in the hospital. If there is a problem I have with anything, it is drinking and driving. I was raised in a christian home and I have never been around alcohol myself but I just can't understand why anyone would get behind the wheel intoxicated or with someone intoxicated. Life is too short as it is. Okay, I just wanted to let you know that I am praying for your husband and that girl's family as well.
Regina

Morphemes :'E (that's supposed to be a monster BTW)

I am having a lot of trouble with the morphemes. There's so many things to remember and some you only count sometimes depending on the child's understanding. I feel like I am right on the verge of getting it but I just can't grasp the concept.

Mrs. White,

I just want you to know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. It takes a strong person to keep on coming to class while going through what you're going through (not that I can even begin to pretend to know how you feel). You are an amazing person and one of the biggest hearted teachers I have ever had. You took the time to learn my name and face with all the other students and it really shows that you aren't kidding when you say that you care about us. It really helps me to know that you're like that. It makes me feel like I can talk and ask questions in class and even if I'm wrong you wont just label me that dumb kid who sits in the back of your monday night class. :) I hope everything takes a huge turn for the better for you.

Study Group

Hey every one I was wondering if any one wanted to get together or get on here and study for test 2. Tina and I are getting together but, not sure what day just let me know if you are interested.

After Class...

I just wanted to send my prayers to Mrs. White. After the beginning of tonight's class, I was overwhelmed with emotions. First off thank you for sharing your stories with us. It really does help to strive to succeed in your class. I see all the things you go through in your life, yet you still make it to class and deliver a fun class. I realize that I also need to make my education my top priority. Thanks for letting us know how much you do care. It does really mean alot.
HEy guys,
I could not make it to class tonight, I am very sick. I went to the doctor and they told me I has pharyngitis or something like that I cant even pronounce it correctly. But anyway it is contagiouse so I thought it would be best for me to stay home. I am really upset that I had to miss bacause we were going to discuss our project. Would someone please let me know everything that we discussed? I would really appreciate it alot. Thanks. I will see everyone next week.
Jennifer Decker
My friend is in the Wednesday night class and had talked about joining SCEC, is anyone in our class involved with it and could give me more information? Thanks.

Where is everyone?

I was wondering where everyone is and if all of you are alright?

The class I missed....

Hello class....

I missed Monday nights class. I have read the material as well as looked at the powerpoint for that night but I was wondering if someone would either send me the notes or copy them for me for class next week. I had spoken with the teacher and told her that I was going out of town and may not be back in time for class. It was 6:00 on the nose when I got home in Somerset, so there was no way I could make it to class. I am sure I missed something, for the class is always interesting the way Mrs. White teaches it. I was pretty pleased with the test result I got other than I totally goofed on one of the questions. Well, hope everyone has a great rest of the week and weekend.

Learning to Mean

I am having a little trouble distinguishing differences in the semantic-feature hypothesis the and the prototype hypothesis. I think it is the examples of animals. The prototype hypothesis seems to mean the same as overextend. Please help me to distingush the difference more clearly.

Thanks in advance.

morphemes, friend or foe?

I think that this unit is a tricky one, i think i'm pretty clear on the morphemes and i'm almost sure i have the utterances but together they get confusing because they all start to blend- any pointers???
Hello everyone,
I think I finally have this "blogging" thing down pat. Its really neat, and now I cant stop! haha It is addicting. I am eager to find out more about our language project. Looking forward to class next monday. Cya

absent :(

I was absent last night due to the stomach virus. I was just wondering if someone would let me know what we did and if I could get with someone right before class next Monday to get caught up on anything. I hate to miss class, however I don't think anyone would have wanted me there!
He guys
I had a really hard time at first trying to figure out how many morphemes and utterances there were in the worksheet tonight. I thought it was interesting, it makes you really think. After going over it as a whole group, It became clearer to me. I thought class time really flew by for some reason.
C ya later! :)

Curious....

Hello everyone,
I am curious about what a special education teacher does, and the diffferent areas of it....I am a little foggy when it comes to all of it. The reason I signed up for this class is to have a filler because one of my other classes had gotten canceled and I needed another one in order to be a full time student. I have come to realize that this class is really interesting to me, I realized that there is so much that I thought I knew about language but I really did not! My major right tnow is elem. ed but after subbing for a special ed teacher I really enjoyed pulling children from their classes and working with a few kids at a time because you can have more in depth conversations and form closer bonds...you know what I mean.... I had never thought of that as an option for me until now. I am just kind of gathering research about the area because I may change to special ed..... Does anyone have any advise? Thanks, see you in class tonight!

Mrs. White

Mrs. White, Just wanted to let you know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I was so devasted with the news from class. I hope everything turns out well for your husband and family. Thanks for coming to class and being able to be as strong as you were. I had a brother die three months ago, so I realize how hard something like this can be.

Mrs. White,

I'm not going to be able to make it to class tonight. I'm really sorry, I just thought I should let you know.

It's Monday again!!!!

With this rate, the semester will be over before we know it. Time passes too fast. To Amanda, I commented to your post. I think as a class we should keep Amanda in our prayers. See you all in class.

Goodbye Everyone

Well even though I don't really know anyone in this class too well I wanted to get on here and let everyone know what is going on. I have just recently decided to drop this class. It's not the class nor the teacher or anything like that. I love the class. I hope to take it again someday. For the past few weeks I have been having some major personal problems and this was my only solution. I am needing to take some time to try to get everything sorted out. I'm afraid if I don't then things will only get worse as that is what they have been doing lately. These last few weeks have been extremely difficult for me and this was my only option. It is absolutely nothing against the class or anything. I just have some things that I need to figure out. For some reason life has been throwing me many curve balls lately and I can't seem to hit any of them or even get close. I feel that if I am ever going to be able to help others I have to be able to help myself first. Life has been quite the struggle for me lately. I have been having at least one panic attack each day and that I can not deal with much longer. I'm not sure what life has in store for me or where I will go from here. I'm just trying to do whatever I can to enable myself to move forward during this time in my life. Things are getting way too hard for me to handle so I am having to let go of some things to try to sort it all out. I know most of you would say this should not have been one of them but in the end I know this is best. It was a short time but I had a great time in this class. I hope to take it again another time. I just wanted to take the time out to let everyone know. And I just want to tell everyone, if you are having a difficult time and things are going downhill for you quick, don't do what everyone else around you wants you to do. Don't do what they tell you to do or expect you to do. Sometimes when it comes to situations like this, you have to make the best decision for yourself and think about yourself and do what you feel in your heart is right and just hope that sometime in the future everyone around you will understand. I wish everyone the best of luck. Maybe I will see you all again later on down the road. But right now I need time to figure things out. Thank you for listening and I wish everyone the absolute best. And to Mrs. White, even though it has only been two classes, you have shown me within that short period of time the type of teacher that I hope to be someday. Thank you and good luck to all of you.

Hey!

Hey guys! I hope that everyone has a fun and safe weekend! See everyone Monday!

About the Daycare...

I was suppost to post this for a couple girls awhile back... Sorry, I've been so busy with work and school.

The number for ABC Daycare (where I work) is 859-623-0157
I believe we are still hiring people, if you girls are still interested.

Sorry it took me so long. I just remembered.

I felt the same way!

Don't worry. I also thought the text was difficult to understand. I hate when teachers think everyone should be able to comphrend all the text assigned. When Mrs. White said that she thought it was hard reading, I was relieved!! Plus our activities in class really helped me understand everything better.

Well I hope everyone has a great weekend!!! See everyone on Monday night!

Marcie

Hello

Well, another weekend is arriving and mine is going to be full. I wanted to comment on the class Monday night. I'll have to admit when getting into this text to read, I was overwhelmed. I don't know if it was just me or not but I was having a really hard time comprehending it. After getting to class, I really appreciated the comment made by Mrs. White about the text being hard to understand, boy did I feel better after class Monday. I want to commend her for the excellent job she did conveying the information. I really understood it thanks to her. I want to be able to teach my students someday this very same way.
Thank you Mrs. White

Hello!

Hello everyone! My name is Megan Anderkin. I am from Rockcastle County. I am a junior at EKU and just changed my major to special education. About Me

My name is Justin Howard and I am from Harlan, Kentucky. I attended a community college for one year and then I transfered to EKU.

Have a safe weekend!

Just wanted to wish everyone a safe and happy Labor Day weekend. I will be traveling to Cincinnati to meet up with some girls that I spent my whole summer with. This summer I got to spend two months in Jos, Nigeria. It was one of the best time in my life. This is my third week back in the U.S. so I am missing it very much! I got to teach a kindergarten level class, but the ages of my kids were five to twelve. It was a learning experience for me and I already can't wait to go back!!

hey felica

you said you were looking for a job? I work at ABC daycare in Richmond. We are always hiring. Alot of college girls work there and it it hard to make schedules with everyone's different classes. So you should definitely think about it. It is great experience if you are wanting to become a teacher.

Hello

My name is Jackie and I live in Eubank. I am a mother to three wonderful girls and a grandmother to six; almost seven grandchildren. I am starting my fourth year at EKU. My major is Elementary Education; but I feel that with the diversity of students in our classrooms today, I need to develop skills that will help me to be a teacher that can offer all of my students the best education possible.

Job

Hey guys and girls,

I am looking for a job, I was a temp at ubs and they decided that they could not work with my schedual so if any one knows some where that might be hiring it would be a great help. Thanks in advanced.

No class next week DUH!!

As I was sitting here in my room just commenting on another post, I almost said 'see you next monday....' I then realized however that we will NOT be in class... Though I will miss seeing all of you dearly, I must say that I will be enjoying the weekend at the lake house with my girlfriend and her grandparents quite a bit! Hope you all have a great long weekend! See you in two weeks. God Bless!

Hello!!!

Hey guys! I'm Tamara Stephens. I've been at EKU for 2 years now. I recently changed my major from IECE to LBD. It was a great first night! See you all next week!!

HELP!!!

Hey everyone! I was just wondering if anyone knew what Mrs. White said, when she emphasised that we should probably write down what she was saying if we cared about our grade because it would be on a test. It was when she first began teaching. I didnt catch on to what she said and never asked because I was too busy writing everything else down. Please help!!!

Thanks

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Just curious!!

So I was just wondering.... Who all wanted to take a break in the middle of class and who would like to go straight through? Personally I would like to get out earlier, but having just sat through my night class this evening for just about the whole time, I think I would go crazy sitting still for that long haha.

My personal opinions

I learned quite a bit in the class. I knew that there were two different kinds of teachers but I now have names for them. I intend to be a teacher more focused on what the kids learn. When I was in school the teachers weren't really concerned that the special education students learned anything they just passed them on through school. In my opinion a child will only reach the expectations you have for it so in other words its the teacher who sets a child's limitations.I truly believe that the special needs students are capable of so much more than we tend to give them credit for. I did get to observe a wonderful teacher interacting with her students for one of my previous college classes and you could just see it in all that she did that she loved those kids and they were the most important things to her (not to mention she told them often how wonderful they were) and those kids learned a lot they were all very intelligent and on the oposite side of the spectrum I took a peer tutoring class in highschool in which I saw a teacher who sat behind her desk all day and never interacted with the students unless she was being observed by the principal, she left everything else to the aids and the students coming in to do the peer tutoring. In this class it was obvious with some of the students that no one ever cared if they learned anything there was a fifteen year old boy who couldn't have told you what his own last name was. I will never forget those kids...they're what inspired me. Because of this teacher they were suffering. I know I have a lot to offer my classroom in the future because I have seen both teaching methods in effect. I know that this is my passion and I hope to succeed in this field.
Hello all! It was great meeting all of you and i look forward to this semester.

To Answer Professor White's Question...

Well I feel that I did learn something from last night's class, even though it was only a short time. I feel confident in saying that I can see the difference between speech, language, and communication. I like how we leaned the importance in making sure students learn! This is a crucial point in being a good teacher. When I look back at my favorite teachers, I liked the ones who cared about me actually grasping the material the most. It helps students when their teachers reach out to them.

Book Cost

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how much the book is for this class. Thanks

>.<

Hello Leah here,

I'm still (!) fighting to straighten out my financial aid issues and so I haven't been able to get my books yet; if anyone is able to let photocopy there book I would be very appreciative. It is my hope that by the time that this class meets again that it will be all finished, but I try to prepare for the future when possible. Thank you for your time. ^_^

hey there

My name is Bethany Scott. I am a sophmore new to the Richmond campus and i know like no one! My major is Occupational Science and i am hoping to get my master's degree so i can be an Occupatinal Therapist so i thought that this class would be useful.

Quick Hello

This is Amanda House. Just a quick post to say hi to everyone. So "HI." Oh and does anyone know what the final tally was on when class would end each night?

Quick Hello

Wow! What a neat group of students! Thanks so much for your participation last night. I'm curious. . . What did you LEARN????? I'd love to have you add a comment or create a new post and share anything you LEARNED as a result of the couple of hours we spent together.

Mrs. White

PS - Feel free to upload pictures of yourself with an introduction. It will help me get to know names and faces!!

Hello class!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello, my name is Regina Fultz. I am a Special Education major working on an MSD certification. I am also going to be able to teach p-5 with an emphasis in math k-12.After getting a feel for the class tonight I really think I am going to enjoy it.I currently work with a blind student and am learning braille. This student was normal until Feb. 2007 when she received sudo tumors behind her eyes due to a medication she was given by a quack doctor. She is going to be leaving shortly to go to KSB (Kentucky School for the Blind.) For those whom may not know, braille is very challenging but I tend to give it my all and help this student to succeed as long as I am going to be working with her.I have worked in special education as an assistant for this is my 19th year. I have witnessed so much negativity from classroom professionals that it isn't even funny. As a matter of fact it is very very sad to see the amount of teachers who are actually what I would call SO CALLED TEACHERS.My motto is and always will be: EVERY CHILD CAN LEARN NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCE. SOME MAY JUST NEED THAT EXTRA LOVE AND ATTENTION. Guess that's enough for this blog.

The First Day

I am very excited that I am taking this class!! After leaving class today, I found myself even more eger to start my career in special education! I am so happy that I'm am finally taking all my major courses. Professor White really seems passionate about her teaching. Even more, she cares that we learn the material.

Is anyone else taking any other SED classes this semester? I know I loaded up. Maybe I'll see some of you around.
