He guys
I had a really hard time at first trying to figure out how many morphemes and utterances there were in the worksheet tonight. I thought it was interesting, it makes you really think. After going over it as a whole group, It became clearer to me. I thought class time really flew by for some reason.
C ya later! :)

I thought class went quick too! Don't worry thought I also had a difficult time doing the morphemes and utterances... I think I was just thinking too much about it.
Hopefully we will get it! By the end of class I felt way more confident!

I too was really confused on the morphemes. I think what got me is knowing which ones to count and which ones not to based on whether or not the child understood that he was using them

This is A GREAT way to reflect, clarify our thinking and deepen our understanding.

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THE TOPIC AND COMMENTING!!!

The child will typically NOT REALIZE OR UNDERSTAND he is using morphemes. What we need to ask ourselves is, "Does what the child say "have meaning?"

We know that when a child DOES say "She dropped the eggs" that he is communicating to you TWO pieces of information with DROPPED.

It's an action - he knows that.
It has already happened - he knows that - and how to tell you it ALREADY happened by saying droppED.

If the child just said, "She drop eggs." we wouldn't know for sure if it had already happened or not. Perhaps it DID but the child didn't know how to communicate past tense YET.

Soooooooooo - when we are counting morphemes we are counting the PARTS (the smallest units of meaning) of the words that give us ADDITIONAL information or meaning.

Yes, there are some EXCEPTIONS to the rules (if you think PART and not THOUGHTS) as in the case of COMPOUND words. In this case the child is still communicating ONE IDEA or ONE THOUGHT not two although there are two PARTS of a compound word such as toothbrush. He is still just talking about ONE thing.

Help? Muddy the water?

I thought class went by quickly too! At first I thought I really knew the morphemes and utterances, but towards the end of class I wasn't so sure anymore. I looked over it again last night and I think I understand it now.

I agree with the class going by fast!! Sometimes Monday nights seem to drag on just because its the beginning of the week...but last night went by quick!!! I will probably get the morphemes and utterances confused sometimes but it helped going over it as a class!

I felt as though it was a lot of help for everyone going over counting the utterances and morphemes in class as a group. I feel like it would have been alot harder to do it on our own. Plus all the group work made class fly by. I hope they can always be like that!
