Hello everyone,
I am curious about what a special education teacher does, and the diffferent areas of it....I am a little foggy when it comes to all of it. The reason I signed up for this class is to have a filler because one of my other classes had gotten canceled and I needed another one in order to be a full time student. I have come to realize that this class is really interesting to me, I realized that there is so much that I thought I knew about language but I really did not! My major right tnow is elem. ed but after subbing for a special ed teacher I really enjoyed pulling children from their classes and working with a few kids at a time because you can have more in depth conversations and form closer bonds...you know what I mean.... I had never thought of that as an option for me until now. I am just kind of gathering research about the area because I may change to special ed..... Does anyone have any advise? Thanks, see you in class tonight!

I work with a autism student and I have found that it has only solidified my want to work with children with special needs. I agreed with you that it is enjoyable to work with a few students at a time. I feel that many of these students benifet from this time the most. As a individual that has disabilities I personally always found that the larger the group I'm in the less that I grasp in the class. I think that it is the distractions as well that teachers would always go so fast that by the time I understood what they were talking about that they were a couple topics ahead of me. So because of this I believe that smaller groups are better; although I relize that we simply dont have the people nor the resourses to do so all the time. So I think that students would benifet from a slower pace. I dont know if this helps you at all, but I hope it at least gives you a little more propective on the subject.
If you are really thinking about becoming a special education major you need to decide what area you want to go into. For example I am an LBD major which deals mainly in learning disabilities and students with emotional behavior disorders. With these types of students its all about trying to set up goals for them that they can reach and helping them get there. Whether it be by setting up an intervention for a socially unexceptable behvior or just giving more one on one tutoring. Special education really goes into trying to figure out all the different ways students can learn and deciding whats best for that particular student in need. Hope that helps out a little bit. Anymore quesions let me know.
