So Im pretty excited for the field trip were going on. It will be nice to not have to be stuck in a classroom for a little over 2 hours ( no offense Mrs. White). I think it will be a great oppurtunity to learn alot more about our field and trying to help students learn.

Field Trip Monday

I accidently deleted my email and need to know what time we are supposed to meet for the field trip. If anyone could let me know I would appreciate it.

News from Washington, D.C.

Greetings from the nation's capitol! Gallaudet won 95-83 tonight although they were ahead by 25 at one point in the first half! Examples of language samples

Mrs. White,

I was wondering if you were going to put the examples of the language samples you went over in class on the overhead. I think I asked and you said you would but I have looked through everything on Bb and cannot find them. I thought I might try and finish my sample this holiday break or at least work really hard on trying to. I may have looked over it which is possible. If so where can I find it. I just wanted something to look at when it comes down to the final steps. It always helps to have an example to go by.

Thanksgiving

I said this in class in an abreviated fashion. Here is the typical Mrs. White's long winded version...

As Thanksgiving approaches. . .I am thankful for each of you - sappy as it sounds and what you have taught me this semester. I'd say I'm thankful you have listened to me preach - but then - what choice did you have . I'm thankful for students who want to learn, who email and ask questions, who call and make sure, who put family first, who come to class when they don't feel like it, who know when they need to check their priority list and stay home (or go to the hospital), who choose a different major when they realize teaching isn't for them, who dig in and give it their all for the love of children, who know when to laugh it off and realize it's not about the grade it's about what they've learned - and they've learned all they can for that day, who believe that no matter where you come from, how much money your parents have in their pocket, how much education they had, what language they speak, what their skin color is, how well they can walk, talk, think, hear or see . . . I am thankful for the student who believes that child can - despite what society would say - can learn at high levels and WANTS to teach them. That's why I am thankful for so many of you.

Prayer Request

Hey guys..I want to ask all of you who believe in prayer to say a prayer for my family. My aunt passed away about 4:30 this morning, and it's really hard on my family.
Thanks So much

Keene Hall

So Keene hall is basically a death trap. The middle elevator had dropped 10 floors and last night while I was in it it droped 2 floors. the 4th floor has no power and some boys are catching the trash cans out side on fire. The RA's in Keene said that they will not do anything about the elevator because no one has gotten hurt and they know that one of the cables have snapped.
I am doing my test now because work has been crazy with the free coupon that we had in the news paper. Hope everyone had a good weekend see you all tomarrow.

More Test Help.

So I remember Mrs. White saying that we would use the articles on BB for the test. Which question did you all find that they helped with? Thanks! .... Again...

Test Help.

Hey all, Ashtin and I went to the library Thursday and looked up some of the answers to help eachother out, having said that, we had some trouble locating where the answer for number one and five. Thanks for your help!

Article

Would someone care to tell me the title of the article we did our summary on? I cannot seem to find it and the one that is on blackboard is not the same one.

Thanks

Class - Monday, 24th

Just reminding folks we DO have class, Monday, the 24th. I realize many of us will be traveling that week (I'm going to DC to see Sekoe) so some will need to miss class. Be sure you are checking your attendance. Don't forget to check the syllabus to see that four unexecused absences will result in a drop of a letter grade for the course.

Attendance in class is an expectation. I look forward to seeing many of you Monday night. I'm sure it'll be an event of Thanksgiving!

Observation Question

I'm writing my observation right now and it is quite lengthy I feel. I was just wondering how long it is suppost to be. I looked through all my notes and papers, but couldn't find anything about the length. I feel like I have a lot I can talk about to relate my observation to what I've learn in class... Which I don't think is a bad thing :) I just didn't want to write too much. Thanks!

SUBMITTING Observation

Make sure you submitted your observation to Blackboard AFTER THURSDAY NIGHT AT 11:00 or it is lost in cyberspace. If you submitted it prior to that you MUST SUBMIT IT AGAIN.

Class

Sounds like Imissed alot on Monday. Sorry I missed everyone, I wasn't feeling well. I have been having problems with my stomach lately. Well I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday.

Praxis

Ok I know that this does not exactly go with this class but has any one taken the praxis test? I have to take it Saterday, and I am really nervious, I am already a semester behind because I missed my ACT score by 1 point. I was wondering if any one had any tips, I have a book that is by the same people who make the Praxis and have been doing good in it.
On another note my observation on tuesday was interesting I had to chase a student that was suppoed to be in a FMD room around the school she did want to be in there. Not sure why. but it took a lot of COMMUNCATION to get her to finally stay in the room. which was extreamly difficult to do with a student who has a 3 word vocabulary.

Projects!!

Just wondering what people think on the semantics option with the Language Analysis project? I found that not to be too bad! I think this is the one I will do, however I like the pragmatics one as well. Which one have you all decided to do? Was there anything extremely challenging when completing it? Or do you all have any suggestions?

RAIN :(

I don't know if anyone agree's, but it was freezing today. I hope everyone had a better day, because rain, freezing cold temperatures, and NO UMBRELLA doesn't mix what so ever. On another note, last night was extremely helpful with the projects. I was scared at first and a bit clueless on how I was going to format my project, however now I have a very clear idea! I am glad we dedicated most of the class time to our language analysis projects. Thanks :)

Bonus Points Available

Everyone in class receives this booklet FREE. It is a GREAT way for you to see how the components of language that we are discussing are essential in teaching students to read. We have discussed how these develop in a child's spoken language. The book will show you how the various components of syntax and semantics are so important in developing reading skills.

You have to do NOTHING with the booklet. However, if you WANT you have the opportunity to use it to earn bonus points.

What you will do is you will choose either syntax or semantics. You will read through the book using the Double Note Entry form. On the left hand side make notes - you do not have to copy entire paragraphs or EVERY one. You will choose what you believe are the MAIN ideas or key points. You might put the beginning of a phrase and the page number on the left. On the right side then put a reflection of what we have learned about that idea in class, an activity we have done, a personal reflection or a connection you have with that to the real world. The number of points will be determined by your effort, the amount of information you provide up to 20 points.
