I feel like I learned a lot tonight from class. I really didn't know that about being deaf. I had no ideas there were that my ways people sign. Recently, I have thought about taking a ASL class, but it looks extremely complex. Does anyone have any advice?
On a different note:
I was shocked today from the movie when it said that parents used to take their children on airplane rides to see if they would gain their hearing. Then the older man said he was taken to a baseball game to meet Babe Ruth so he would be cured.

Am taking ASL right now and I must say that it is one of my favorite class's.
i thought monday was our best class so far this semester.. it was really interesting time flew by in there
Thought the airplane thing was interesting as well. But being a parent if you thought of being deaf as a disability wouldn't you try any and everything possible to "cure" it?
That's just it . . . many of us parents don't see it as a disability at all. We see no need to "cure" our children. If anything my fault is the desire to "cure" parents who are obsessed with the unimportant things in life that rarely bring the type of true joy and happiness that I have experienced through the eyes and life of my deaf step-son.
It kind of upset me too that the parents were so intent on "curing" them. There's nothing at all wrong with these kids, but a parent that detirmined to "cure" them can sure make them think there is.
